Cooking With CBD | Cannabis Butter

 
 

We are starting off our “Cooking with CBD” segment with the ingredient that most of us use on a daily basis and can’t get enough of - butter. The good thing about this dairy product is that making the CBD butter doesn’t require professional cooking skills nor extensive cannabis knowledge. Plus, you can use it daily to get the CBD benefits in the most discreet way.

Cooking with CBD flowers is tricky, but the effort can be rewarding. Here is everything you need to know:

Decarboxylation

If you are new to cooking with cannabis then it may come as a surprise, but you cannot cook with raw cannabis buds. In order to make your flowers usable and its cannabinoids effective, you have to go through a process called decarboxylation.

Don’t worry, it isn’t as hard as it sounds! Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 110ºC (230ºF)

  2. Gently break apart your flowers using a hand-grinder, scissors or your hands. DO NOT grind your cannabis too fine. The consistency should be of cannabis that you would roll into a joint (view image below).

  3. Place the grinded flowers on a sheet pan/oven-safe tray/baking dish (you may want to cover it with parchment paper to prevent sticking). Spread them evenly and insert the tray into the oven for 40 to 50 minutes.

  4. Check on your cannabis every 10 minutes, gently mixing it with a light shake. The decarboxylation process is done when the color of your flowers gets darker (of a deep green-brown tone).

Making the butter

All you need is a saucepan, a cheesecloth (or metal strainer), butter, water and your decarboxylated cannabis (also a little bit of patience and a lot of free time).

  1. Start by adding 350ml of water and 250g of butter (non melted) into your saucepan. Place it on low heat and let the butter melt. Adding water helps to regulate the temperature and prevents the butter from scorching.

  2. Once the butter is melted, you can add your decarboxylated cannabis and mix everything with a wooden spoon. Cover the saucepan with a lid.

  3. Maintain low heat. If you have a thermometer, you can check for the temperature to remain under 85ºC (± 180ºF). Let the mixture simmer for 3 to 4 hours, gently stirring it every 30 minutes. Your butter should never come to a full boil.

  4. Finally, let the butter cool off and use a cheesecloth (or a metal strainer) to strain the cannabutter into a container or a jar. (Tip: don’t squeeze the cheesecloth as it may push more bad-tasting plant material through). Keep it in a refrigerator and use at your convenience!

How to dose CBD butter?

Just like with most of the CBD products, you will need to figure out what dose works best for you. As always, we recommend starting low, by spreading ¼ or ½ teaspoon of CBD butter on a snack and see how that dose affects you after an hour. Decrease or increase dose as desired. You can then use this personalized “standard” dose as a baseline for your recipes.
